The Department of Pathology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center / Jackson offers a one-year, ACGME approved fellowship program focusing on diagnostic cytology. The fellowship provides advanced training and experience in all areas of cytopathology including gyn, non-gyn, and fine-needle aspiration biopsies. Our cytology laboratory processes 64,447 pap smears (liquid based). We also offer in-house reflex HPV testing. Our non-gyn volume consists of 1,455 body fluids and 682 fine needle aspiration biopsies. Ancillary techniques such as immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy, and flow cytometry are available for more comprehensive evaluation of diagnostically challenging cases. The fellow also participates in interdepartmental conferences and teaching pathology residents and medical students. Involvement in clinical research leading to publication in a peer-reviewed journal is encouraged and well supported. Completion of this program qualifies the candidate to take the cytopathology subspecialty boards.
